Select combustion-lubrication oil by two-stroke performance and delivery method, not four-stroke MA/MB classes. Follow manufacturer requirements for injection or premix ratios. A separate gearbox needs its own specified fluid.

Separate combustion lubrication and gearbox oil

In many two-stroke motorcycles, lubricant enters with intake/fuel and is burned rather than circulating as four-stroke sump oil that is drained periodically. Manual two-strokes may also have separate gearbox oil. A two-stroke engine does not mean every compartment takes combustion lubricant.

Two-stroke oil enters combustion as designed, so selection involves lubrication, detergency and combustion-related performance. Four-stroke oil generally works in a circulating system with different applications and tests. A two-stroke scooter's oil tank is also distinct from its final-drive gearbox; the vehicle may need two different oils. Identify every fill point before treating all oil as interchangeable.

FC/FD are separate from MA/MB

JASO M 345 FB, FC and FD are two-stroke classes, not replaceable by four-stroke MA2. The checked May 2025 manual implements M 345:2024: FC addresses smoke and exhaust-system blocking requirements, while FD raises high-temperature detergency requirements. These tests do not mean FD repairs wear or removes mixing-ratio limits. Engine and delivery-system suitability remain necessary.

Understand marine TC-W3 separately. NMMA certification covers marine two-stroke oil requirements; the two-stroke label alone does not establish suitability for every motorcycle. Operating conditions and specified performance differ, so vehicle permission is necessary. API TC, JASO FC and TC-W3 are not a simple low-to-high ladder detached from their applications.

Manufacturer example: HI-SPEED 2T

The checked PTT HI-SPEED 2T sheet is Revision 0/2022, listing API TC and JASO FC with injection and premix uses. These are claims for that product version, not permission to relabel it FD or transfer them to a similar name. Match bottle and sheet and retain batch or supply records. A different Taiwan version needs its own documentation.

Manage injection and premix

Delivery method and checks
MethodPriority
Oil injectionCheck tank, suitability and warnings; running empty may require system bleeding rather than simply refilling and riding.
PremixMeasure the specified fuel:oil ratio in a separate container and label the mixture.
Separate gearboxFind gearbox/clutch requirements separately from combustion 2T oil.

An injection tank containing oil does not prove delivery. Pump, hoses, joints and bleeding procedures determine whether oil reaches the engine. A dry tank, disconnected line or component replacement needs competent system service. Avoid repeated starts with uncertain delivery or arbitrary extra oil in petrol as a remedy. Changing delivery method needs a defined manufacturer-based procedure and verification.

Read the ratio before calculating

If the manufacturer explicitly specifies fuel:oil = 50:1, 5 liters of fuel needs 5,000÷50 = 100 ml of oil. This is a calculation example, not a universal recommendation. Do not add premix to an injection system “for safety”; total delivery must match its design.

Use graduated measuring equipment, record both quantities and follow safe mixing procedures. Bottle-cap measures, colour guesses or reversing 50:1 lose control.

Investigate oil delivery when faults occur

Stop for an empty oil tank, leaking supply line, suspected delivery loss, knocking or sudden power loss. Smoke also depends on delivery, combustion and exhaust condition; low-smoke oil does not justify reducing the specified amount. Confirm mixing and equipment compatibility before changing products.

Smoke and deposits cannot be diagnosed merely by switching brands. Excess delivery, operating conditions, system faults and mechanical issues need separate checks. Stop for sudden heavy smoke, abnormal noise, power loss or suspected interrupted lubrication. Give the workshop product, recent fuel and oil quantities, any oil shortage and symptom timing. Record delivery-system work and verification, not just an oil change.

Frequently asked questions

Q1. Should two-stroke combustion oil be selected by MA2?

No. Use two-stroke requirements for combustion lubrication; a separate gearbox may have its own four-stroke/friction requirement.

Q2. Can FD oil be used at a lower ratio?

The class does not change manufacturer delivery quantities or premix ratios.

Q3. Can TC-W3 be used directly in any two-stroke motorcycle?

Do not assume so. Manufacturer permission and complete performance suitability are required.
