Hydraulic fluid needs suitable viscosity from cold start through operation while transmitting power, lubricating and handling air/contamination. ISO VG is a viscosity grade, not a quality ranking; thicker is not automatically better.

Separate base family, viscosity and performance

Fluid family affects material compatibility and duty limits; viscosity affects suction, leakage and film; performance specifications cover antiwear, oxidation and other requirements. Mineral, synthetic, environmentally acceptable and fire-resistant fluids are not freely interchangeable. Fire-resistant does not mean impossible to burn; verify pumps, seals, coatings, filters and temperatures before conversion.

HLP/HVLP distinguish antiwear and improved viscosity-temperature types; read abbreviations alongside full DIN/ISO requirements and product documentation. OEM approval, claimed specification compliance and similar typical properties are different evidence. Where approval is required, verify the exact product and grade rather than extending one grade’s status to the entire series.

ISO VG versus operating viscosity

ISO VG identifies kinematic viscosity at 40°C. Mobil’s data show distinct typical values for grades such as 32, 46 and 68 at 40°C/100°C, illustrating temperature dependence rather than recommending one grade for every pump. Check cold-start and maximum oil temperatures, pump limits and piping together, not ambient climate alone.

Excess viscosity can increase suction resistance and cold-start load; insufficient viscosity can increase leakage and weaken film. Viscosity index describes temperature response, but shear retention also matters; a high new-oil index does not guarantee lasting behavior. For cold-start trouble or hot weakness, measure temperature and check pump, filter and cooling before changing grade.

Particles, air and water differ

Particles affect precise pumps/valves; water can affect lubrication, corrosion and filters; air can cause noise, foam and unstable response. Foam is not only formulation-related: inspect suction connections, level, return arrangement and residence time. New oil may not meet the system target, so use clean sealed transfer tools and required filtration, not a funnel used for other fluids.

Record sample temperature, hours, top-ups and repairs and use a consistent suitable point to trend viscosity, water, particles and wear. Limits depend on components and the laboratory plan, not one universal water/particle threshold. Milky appearance, debris, rapid heating or recurrent filter blockage needs diagnosis; oil changes do not replace cleaning and repair.

Safe changes and acceptance

Do not disconnect returns and run pumps to eject oil as a generic change method. Lock out and isolate accumulators, loads and stored energy, verify pressure release and support, then drain/clean to equipment procedures. Never feel for high-pressure leaks by hand; injection injury needs urgent medical care. Formulation changes need compatibility/residual plans rather than assumed cleaning after repeated flushing.

Record product, batch, quantity, filters and sample results; bleed and test response, temperature, pressure and leaks as instructed. Stop commissioning for wrong level/fill, persistent noise or heating and investigate with the maker. A fresh date is not acceptance; do not restore production with unresolved checks or impose universal two-/three-year mineral/synthetic limits.

Equal-pressure machines may need different oil

An indoor molding machine and an outdoor implement can have similar pressure but different cold starts, reservoirs, piping and viscosity limits. Compare temperature profiles with pump requirements rather than automatically raising heavy duty to grade 68. For stock consolidation establish overlap for each machine and document maker/supplier evaluation; retain separate oils where no overlap exists.

At receipt verify required viscosity and performance, full product identity, data-sheet revision and batch. After changeover retain filter differential pressure, temperature, function tests and sampling baseline; changed cold-start or hot-load behavior requires checking selection and delivery. A one-time temperature drop does not quantify energy savings or establish a universal drain-life multiple.

Frequently asked questions

Q1. Is grade 46 higher quality than 32?

No; it identifies viscosity. Suitability depends on temperature and component limits.

Q2. Does poor efficiency mean new oil is needed?

Check temperature, level, filters, air, pumps/valves and condition; one symptom is insufficient.

Q3. Can fire-resistant fluid be filled directly?

Verify components, seals and conversion procedures; draining alone is not compatibility assessment.
