Brake fluid transmits hydraulic force. Use model requirements, duty and valid testing to determine service. Higher DOT numbers do not make fluids freely interchangeable; silicone DOT 5 and nonsilicone DOT 5.1 are distinct and must not be converted casually.

Fluid works inside a sealed hydraulic circuit

Pedal force travels through master cylinder, lines and wheel-end hydraulic components; brake fluid should not reach pad/disc friction surfaces. Air or vapor increases compressibility and affects pedal/pressure transmission. Bleeding, boiling resistance, cold viscosity and seal compatibility matter, unlike ordinary engine-oil duties. Contamination can damage rubber and hydraulic components.

Distinguish common nonsilicone DOT 3/4/5.1 products from silicone DOT 5. Miscibility among nonsilicone products does not establish full vehicle compliance; mixing can alter performance and does not remove low-viscosity, ABS/ESC or special requirements. Wrong mineral/engine oil cannot be considered repaired merely by extracting the reservoir fill.

Read chemistry and specification together

Reading DOT categories correctly
ItemDecision and action
DOT 3Standard minimum dry/wet boiling points 205/140°C; vehicle requirements still govern.
DOT 4Minimum 230/155°C; DOT 4 products need not share the same cold viscosity.
DOT 5 siliconeDifferent base family; no casual mixing/conversion with nonsilicone fluids.
DOT 5.1 nonsiliconeSimilar name to DOT 5 but different family; use only as vehicle-permitted.

The boiling figures are minimums under the read historical FMVSS 116 test conditions, not bottle measurements or exact brake-failure temperatures. Dry/wet tests have defined procedures; their difference cannot calculate annual degradation. Products may exceed minimums, but chasing dry boiling point alone ignores cold flow, compatibility and vehicle requirements.

Intervals, moisture and color

Some makers schedule replacement and others a health check with replacement as needed. Model 3’s check is not a four-year universal change rule; heavy loads, descents or heat-intensive braking may need more frequent assessment. Check the exact model-year, last date and use history; have unknown history assessed instead of imposing a universal year/mileage interval.

Darkness, cloudiness or deposits prompt investigation but cannot establish moisture or boiling point alone. Use a test suitable for the formulation and interpret it to instrument and vehicle limits; simple conductivity pens are not universally precise moisture tests. Record method, sample location and decision basis rather than merely “bad color”.

Investigate low level

Pad wear can change reservoir level, as can leaks, so low level is not simply a top-up-to-MAX instruction. Inspect wear and leaks to model requirements and avoid overfill when pads are renewed. Stop driving for warnings, a sinking/abnormally soft pedal or visible leakage; topping up is not clearance for further brake trials.

Keep caps and transfer tools clean and exclude water, oil and dirt. Use compliant, properly stored product and do not refill with drained fluid. Avoid skin, eyes and paint contact and clean to product/vehicle guidance. Pads, discs and fluid are separate service items: new pads neither automatically require nor eliminate fluid service.

Competent replacement and bleeding

Use the model's wheel-end sequence, pressure settings, electronic controls and any required ABS service mode to renew and bleed all relevant hydraulic circuits. Reservoir extraction handles only part of the fluid and cannot replace the model's complete service procedure. Without data, tools or competence, use a workshop; pedal movement alone is not acceptance.

Record specification, product/batch, date, bleeding and test results and confirm connections, lines and wheel ends are leak-free with normal pedal/warnings. A technician should road-test only under safe conditions and stop on faults. For PTT enquiries provide the vehicle and complete brake-fluid requirements rather than recommending an engine-oil series.

Tell the workshop about wrong-fluid additions, circuit repairs or pedal abnormalities because they alter service needs. Obtain specifications, date and work results. New pedal, warning or leakage changes require workshop contact and stopping unsafe driving; fresh fluid does not prove every fault is resolved.

Frequently asked questions

Q1. Is a higher DOT always better?

No. Meet full vehicle requirements; silicone DOT 5 is not a casual DOT 4 upgrade.

Q2. Does clear color mean no replacement?

Color cannot establish performance; use the schedule and valid testing.

Q3. Does pad replacement always require new fluid?

Assess separately; fluid schedule, contamination or circuit repairs govern, and new pads do not remove fluid checks.
